Our April event at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park on Saturday, April 13th was a big
hit for the 23 members and guests who attended. We all met at the main entrance to the Park at 10 AM and took a tram to the beginning of the Wildlife Trail. You can also take a boat, but I wanted to
make sure that our group got to experience the activity of the animals before the weekend throngs arrived. A few of our members took the boat ride back to the entrance at the end of the visit. The Homosassa Park features almost all of Florida’s wild residents with one exception: Lu the 59-year-old hippo who is the first animal that one usually meets when entering the Park. Lu has spent most of his life at the Park. Additionally, our group got to see a Florida bear, foxes, bobcats, otters, and manatees. The bird population at the Park is impressive as well. We saw eagles, owls of all sorts, both brown and white pelicans, flamingos, and black-crowned night herons. My favorite spot in the park is the enclosed area where you can get up close and personal with Florida’s most colorful bird,
the Roseate Spoonbill, not one but many. The volunteers at Homosassa State Wildlife Park were very helpful and certainly made our group feel special. Michael Gulick was surprised with a gift from the Park for his service to our country and his disability as a helicopter pilot in the Army…a lifetime State Parks membership!!! This was available to any veteran that could show a disabled designation on their VA ID. Quite an honor indeed. After spending a couple of hours at the Park we traveled to our lunch location, the Old Mill Tavern. Of course, eating out is always an important part of our events. The food was good. Lynn and I really liked their Jalapeno Poppers and their fried catfish
lunch. It was a great place to socialize with our fellow members. Many other interesting events are on our club calendar. We hope to see you at one of them soon.
