On Friday, June 18, 2021 the Tampa Bay Section members traveled to Sarasota to visit the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College. We had planned to do this event in 2020, however the pandemic got in the way. We had a great turnout with 27 folks attending. This museum is in a beautiful historic converted high school and offers traveling events. Presently, there are no permanent exhibits. Featured during our visit was the satiric art of African American artist Robert Colescott. The collection is titled “Art and Race Matters.” Colescott died in 2009 at 83 years of age. Colescott’s focus was on the racist imagery of mid 20th century American culture. His art is packed with satiric, anti-racist paintings. There were two other less known artists featured as well. The tour was self-guided. Following our Museum visit everyone got a chance to socialize with our fellow members and guests at nearby Connor’s Steak & Seafood. Food was excellent, however service was quite slow. We were given a room. I think that everyone had a good time. Thanks to Club VP Connie Dolin who did a great job setting up this event.
